SYNERGY: Rethinking the Streetscape
This project focused on integrating Nature-based Solutions (NBS) into the regeneration of industrial and retail areas within the Metropolitan City of Milan, with particular emphasis on the neighborhoods of Città Studi and Lambrate. Although geographically adjacent, the two areas are separated by a railway line and shaped by markedly different identities: Città Studi is a historically consolidated district centered on education and research, while Lambrate is a newer, evolving neighborhood with strong industrial and agricultural roots. These contrasts generate distinct user profiles and mobility patterns, making connectivity and accessibility a central challenge.
The project aimed to reimagine these areas through sustainable strategies that enhance connectivity and promote equitable access, with a strong focus on slow mobility solutions. By applying eleven design principles identified through SWOT analyses, the proposal explored actions to enhance biodiversity, improve thermal comfort, foster circular economies, accelerate the energy transition, and ensure public safety. The resulting vision demonstrates how Nature-based Solutions and energy-efficient alternatives can transform fragmented urban areas into resilient, inclusive, and multifunctional spaces that support both local communities and urban ecosystems.
